For many students, style is a frightening word. When they hear “you play not in the style of the composer”, they understand that they did something they were not supposed to: used too much rubato or too much pedal, for instance. Thus, the word “style” begins to signify a list of prohibitions, of things you must NOT do. In this lecture we’ll talk about things you CAN do, you should do, you are encouraged to do in the performance.
